After starting in mainstream theatre, John worked for fifteen years in theatre lighting and design for a youth arts centre and theatre-in-education company, the Greenwich Young People's Theatre, in Southeast London, also teaching photography there. He then worked at at Durham University and subsequently at the University of Gloucester, specialising in Holocene vegetation and climate history. He is now retired and concentrates mainly on film based black and white landscape photography.
